The First Summer Camp for Outstanding Students in Public Administration at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology was Successfully Concluded

From July 30 to 31, the first summer camp for outstanding college students in public administration disciplines hosted by the Department of Public Administration of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology(USST) was successfully conducted through online meeting. A total of 90 students from 78 universities submitted applications for this camp. Seventy students from 64 universities were confirmed to participate in the first day of the camp, and 40 applicants were finally selected for interviews.

At the opening ceremony on July 30, Prof. Zhao Laijun, Dean of Business School and the leader of public management discipline, delivered a speech. Prof. Zhao Laijun expressed his warm welcome and good wishes to the campers from all colleges and universities in China, and introduced the overview of the school, the discipline status quo and the professional degree education center.

After that, Professor Yang Dali from the Department of Political Science of the University of Chicago gave a lecture on Regulatory State-building in Comparative Perspective to the campers. Starting from the current risks and uncertainties facing the world, Prof. Yang introduced the risks and corresponding regulatory issues faced by the US, China and EU countries through a comparative perspective. During the interactive session, Prof. Yang responded to questions from Dean Zhao, faculty members of the Department of Public Administration and campers.

After that, Associate Professor Luo Guofen and Associate Professor Li Yanan from the Department of Public Administration gave two lectures on Meta-hypotheses in Social Surveys: An example of five major 'meta-hypotheses' in the survey of rural left-behind children and The development of Chinese migrant workers and the path of rural revitalization respectively to the campers.

Taking a social survey on rural left-behind children as an example, Associate Professor Luo Guofen introduced the basic concept of meta-hypothesis in the survey research. He also analyzed the meta-hypothesis problems of the current social survey on rural left-behind children from five aspects: distribution of left-behind children, control group setting, defective family structure, the role of grandparents in non-left-behind children families and the role of grandparents in rural left-behind children families. Finally, Professor Luo interacted with the campers on how to improve their meta-assumptions thinking.

Based on the current development stage and characteristics of Chinese migrant workers, Associate Professor Li Yanan presented the main characteristics of Chinese migrant workers and the development dilemma they face from the intergenerational perspective and household registration perspective, and introduced the path and key policy points of the rural revitalization strategy on how to solve this dilemma. Afterwards, Professor Li gave detailed answers to the campers' questions.

In the sharing session of alumni and students, two outstanding alumni from the Department of Public Administration, Feng Xiaofan and Xing Qing, and outstanding student Min Mengmeng, shared their experiences, feelings and gains of studying in campus and the Department of Public Administration from the perspective of graduates and current students respectively.

Feng Xiaofan discussed the following questions: Is it important to choose a city or a school?, Is it better to have a campus in an urban area or in a suburban county? and Is school ranking or teaching quality more important to students? She introduced the advantages of studying in Business School and the Department of Public Administration, and reviewed her own learning experience and feelings.

Xing Qing shared what she saw, knew and felt in Business School from various aspects, including professional study, social practice and daily life. She mentioned that she should develop a more active learning method and awareness, participate in projects and professional practice in conjunction with the actual practice, test what she has learned and find out shortcomings in practice. At the same time, she encouraged everyone to devote themselves to study and practice with a sincere heart, and constantly strengthen their professional foundation. She also hoped that everyone would choose Business School as a new starting point in their lives and make their own wonderful achievements.

Min Mengmeng shared her two-year journey and self-growth process of studying public administration at USST from the perspectives of scientific research, project practice and social practice. She mentioned that with the help and encouragement from her supervisor and platform of Business School, she began to make breakthroughs and dare to think and do, and not only accumulated more professional knowledge, but also gained valuable growth experiences such as participating in the front line of epidemic fighting and creating the Micro Farming Heart party building brand.

Finally, Zhu Shuicheng, the director of the Department of Public Administration, introduced the basic situation of the Department of Public Administration and the Department of Public Management from four aspects: organizational history, professional and discipline development, faculty strength, and talent training, and exchanged and interacted with the campers.

On July 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the Department of Public Administration organized two groups of mentors to interview the selected 40 campers, and the outstanding campers will be announced on a later date.

By now, the two-day summer camp of the Department of Public Administration of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology came to a successful conclusion.

Introduction of Foreign Experts.

Professor Yang Dali, an expert in American political science, PhD in Political Science, Princeton University. He has been teaching at the University of Chicago since 1992. He is currently the William C. Reavis Chair Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago and Senior Advisor to the President on Global Affairs. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and a member of the Advisory Board of the Paulson Institute at the University of Chicago. Professor Yang has held a number of academic leadership positions, including founding Director of the University of Chicago Beijing Center, Director of the Department of Political Science, Director of the Center for East Asian Studies, and Director of the Council on International Relations at the University of Chicago, and Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore.

Professor Yang's academic publications and papers are extensive, including books in English such as Reinventing China's Dragon: Market Transformation and the Politics of Governance, and he has served on the editorial boards of leading political science journals such as American Political Science Review, World Politics, and Contemporary China. Professor Yang has an in-depth exploration of development, governance, public health and its international impact; he has long settled in the United States and has a deep observation of the current political ecology of the United States, as well as the development of Sino-US relations.
